Colm McGovern, Founder/Owner, Ellax Medical
Colm McGovern M.V.B., Cert DHH is a veterinary surgeon and the Founder and Managing Director of Ellax Medical. Alongside his work with Ellax Medical, Colm continues to practice full-time as a veterinary surgeon and is a partner in two busy mixed-animal veterinary clinics in Galway, maintaining strong clinical expertise across both large and small animal medicine.
Recognising a significant gap in the availability of high-quality, fresh biological materials for medical device research, Colm founded Ellax Medical in 2019. His vision was to create a trusted, reliable supply partner capable of providing ethically sourced, fully traceable animal tissue, blood, and other biological materials to support preclinical research, device development, validation, and clinician training.
With his veterinary background, extensive knowledge of animal anatomy and pathology, and practical experience in tissue procurement, Colm is uniquely qualified to oversee the sourcing and supply of biological materials for research. Every product supplied by Ellax Medical is ethically sourced and fully traceable, operating under the strict regulatory framework set out by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). This commitment ensures the highest standards of quality, compliance, and animal welfare while providing researchers with confidence in the integrity and consistency of the materials they receive.
Working closely with multinational medical device companies, universities, hospitals, and emerging start-ups, Colm understands that every research programme presents unique technical challenges. Ellax Medical specialises in sourcing specific tissue types and biological materials tailored to the individual requirements of each client, enabling more accurate testing, realistic simulation, and efficient progression through preclinical studies and regulatory pathways, including FDA submissions.
Initially established to serve Galway’s internationally recognised medical technology sector, Ellax Medical has experienced significant growth and now supports clients throughout Ireland, Northern Ireland, and across Europe.
